The Rebels are a
Sacramento-based club formed in 1994 by a handful of local runners who
liked training and racing together. We now have over 100 members,
both newcomers to the sport as well as those with over 20 years of
running experience. As Mark Hicks, club President, said in a
recent newspaper interview, “We wanted something that was more
competition oriented without the politics of a big club. I had no idea
it would grow like this.” The name “Rebels” fits both the
club’s founding spirit and it’s ongoing philosophy of training hard,
racing often, and always having a good time.
The Rebels Master's men placed
2nd in the Pacific Association Cross Country Grand Prix standings in
2003, 1st in 2004, and 2nd in 2005. The seniors team placed
1st in 2005. We are adding a women’s teams for 2006.
The club welcomes runners of all abilities. Training paces range
from 5 to 10 minutes per-mile. Join us for a
workout and see for yourself!
What do our runners have to say?
Mike Ammon, said he joined the
club because it reminds him of the old days of running. “You work
out hard with your buddies, race with them, then go have a beer
together. It’s a fun atmosphere. If it stops being fun, I won’t
be around.”
Kevin Cimini one of the club's
founding members says “We make decisions as a team by consensus. There
is no leader, but there's an unmatched collective knowledge base to draw
upon. I’ve belonged to a lot of clubs in 30 years of running. The
Rebels are the best.”
Bryan Hacker, one of the club’s top runners, said he had offers to join
several Northern California clubs but chose the Rebels. “I push a
little harder during races knowing I am running for a club. It’s like
being back in college. I feel I can contribute something and they
are also helping me out.”
Jill Race says "As
someone fairly new to running, I’ve welcomed the support and camaraderie
within such a diverse group. Whether I’m looking for training advice or
simply to undo life stress
with a run, the Rebels are there."
Tami Hicks, a club member
since 1997, recognizes that there’s a myth, particularly among women
runners, that "you have to be fast" to benefit from joining a running
club. She wishes more women would reconsider. "Running with a group has
added consistency to my workouts and has made me a much stronger runner.
The group effort to support your goals makes a powerful difference on
race day."
